This tutorial does its best to:
- identify the early work that lead to the TLV approach to encoding, and the tag concept
- give an understanding of tagging in ASN.1
- give an overview of the use of tags in the main ASN.1 encoding rules - BER and in PER
- present clearly the rules about tagging that have to be followed in writing a correct piece of ASN.1
- help those needing to understand the encoding of ASN.1 constructs that use tags.
This tutorial concentrates solely on tagging. Some familiarity with the ASN.1 notation in general is assumed.
